In the Phillips’ Paper Trade Directories of 1923 and 1970 a watermark described as 'Durable Ledger Laid' is listed as being made by Spicers, Ltd. Spicer Brothers In 1864 a split developed between the sons of John Edward Spicer, with James Spicer going to form his own company. It seems that the remaining brothers ran the Alton mill in Hampshire, and in 1909 moved to the Eynsford mill in Kent. In 1922 the firm merged with James Spicer & Sons to form the new firm Spicers Ltd, that was eventually taken over by the Reed International Group.
